What is a DSE Assessment?

It is a legal requirement to ensure DSE is regulated. As an employer, you must protect your workers from the health risks of working with display screen equipment (DSE), such as PCs, laptops, tablets and smartphones. The Health and Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations apply to workers who use DSE daily, for continuous periods of an hour or more. We describe these workers as 'DSE users'. The regulations don't apply to workers who use DSE infrequently or only use it for a short time.

The law applies if users are, for example:

• At a fixed workstation
• Mobile workers
• Home workers
• Hot-desking (workers should carry out a basic risk assessment if they change desks regularly)

What areas does DSE cover?

DSE covers the use of display screens, so this encompasses the following areas:

• Posture: Advice is given on your posture and on good work practices.
• Chair: The chair is adjusted to meet your physical requirements.
• Display Screen: Screen height, position and suitability (eg flicker) is checked. The assessor will ensure you’re aware of brightness/contrast buttons etc.
• Keyboard/Mouse: Good keyboard/mouse use and suitability is addressed.
• Desk: Height, space and desk management is assessed, and advice offered.
• Eyesight: Issues regarding screen text size and keyboard readability etc are assessed.
• Environment: The assessor will check heating, ventilation, cabling, glare and clear access to the workstation.
• Laptop: Advice on safe use and using correct accessories is given.

How does our free assessment work?

1. We'll complete a DSE workstation assessment with you, asking questions about your workspace.
2. Once completed, we'll provide solutions for reducing the risks identified there.
3. The assessment is then complete.
